Having gotten myself hooked on the new HBO Drama "The Newsroom", political moments that have occurred over the last 2 years seem to made me re-analyse some of the more important moments that have happened over the last 10 years, starting with 9/11. In the most recent episode of the show, the focus was the evening that it became known that US Marines had finally found and killed Osama Bin Laden. It was an emotionally powerful episode (as they all seem to be lately) which got me thinking about the whole process that George "W" went through in "trying" to find Bin Laden, before Obama finally got him last year.
Then it hit me. What if, in this whole time since the attacks, Bin Laden was more of a distraction then anything else? What if Al-Queda had decided to use Bin Laden as their fall guy after 9/11 and focused on other aspects of their "plan" in the meantime? Let me explain.
On a piece about Bin Laden I watched shortly after 9/11 on ABC's 20/20, it was mentioned that Bin Laden had ties to Saudi Royalty but felt compelled to go fight "infidel" invaders of Afghanistan. Of course it would have been known to Al-Qaeda that Bin Laden and many of the other senior members of the Taliban in Afghanistan had been trained by the CIA so allowing the Americans to place the blame entirely on Bin Laden allowed Al-Qaeda to focus on other aspects of their plan. I think Al-Qaeda had a multi-pronged plan that started with 9/11 and has continued in the following years after the attacks, even after Bin Laden was killed last year.
Let me break it down for you. Starting with the premise that the attacks, and the subsequent pursuit of the only man that the US Authorities have ever blamed for the attacks as the first 2 phases then the third phase would have been the anticipated invasion of a country like Afghanistan and the subsequent fall out that would come of invading a sovereign nation all in an attempt to find one man, the loss of respect that would come with it and the loss of trust the rest of the world would have in everything that has to do with the US. I would argue that the 4th phase was the slowest to enact as one of the tenets of Al-Qaeda has been the systemic destruction of Western Civilization, beginning with our financial and social institutions. I believe Al-Qaeda leadership felt that once the US became involved in wars in 2 different countries, they would continue to spend primarily on their military (which they have) and allow many areas of their society to fall to waste (which they have) as they very nearly saw every major bank on Wall Street go bankrupt once Government started peeling away regulations and basically paying more attention to their war machine then their economic system.
Let me give you the details, or at least how I see them as they fit into this master plan of theirs.
In the last 9 years, with all of these "supposed" military assets in search mode for Bin Laden all over Pakistan and Afghanistan, the US Military was able to use this "search" as an excuse to increase their budget to a ridiculous figure. At the same time, the US Economy has been stagnant if not in pure recession mode almost the entire time with the Government more focused on Military spending then fixing the ills of the economy.
The reaction by the White House was both expected and over the top at the same time. President George W. Bush was able to coin the phrase "War on Terror". A prophetic statement indeed given what would transpire over the next 10 years. Bush was then able to turn the perceived threat of possible continued terrorist activities against the US to invade Iraq under false pretenses (in order to finish the job his dad started in 1991 and eradicate another Dictator who had been trained and funded as well by the CIA at the same time as Bin Laden). If that wasn't bad enough, he invaded Afghanistan by saying that the Taliban was hiding Bin Laden. The 2 wars that Al-Qaeda had hoped for, were now in full effect. Their plan was working.
With respect to each of these invasions, Bush made himself and Americans in general look foolish. Firstly, by claiming Saddam Hussein had weapons of Mass Destruction and invading Iraq, Bush was blatantly lying through his teeth yet despite all the evidence to indicate that he WAS in fact wrong about Iraq, not a single person ever brought up the dreaded "I" word. You know, the same one that was brought up against Former President Clinton because he got a little BJ from an intern way back? Impeachment. The Republicans were outraged at the thought of a President getting some sexual favours behind his wife's back while in the Oval Office but killing thousands of innocent Iraqi citizens based upon pure lies is ok? Talk about some pretty ridiculous people. Where are there morals when it comes to killing innocent civilians?
Their actions in Iraq made many people around the world lose a lot of respect and admiration (if any was left in some parts of the world) for the way the US handled foreign affairs. Yes, there were always some people who felt that the US intervened way too much in some areas (like the whole Yugoslavian war) and not enough in others (like most of the African wars over the last 30 years) but with the way they jumped into Iraq again, their real intentions were made very clear: America was concerned with money and protecting their oil interests in the region.
That was the plan all along. By getting the Bush Administration to show their true intentions on the world stage with regards to their foreign policy, the level of respect for the US and Americans in general, took a massive hit as the rest of the world began to see the lies of Bush and his cronies (as well as those of Bush apologists who, to this day, still defend him on Fox News). To put it more succinctly, if 9/11 was Phase 1. and turning Bin Laden into a military diversion was Phase 2, then this would qualify as Phase 3. That is, making the world see that America and Americans in general only care for one thing and one thing only; Money and it's acquisition. Their loss of respect around the world and even for each other was just an added bonus.
The second aspect of Bush's War on Terror (his invasion of Afghanistan), was similar to his invasion of Iraq as it too was done under false pretenses. Despite all the reasons that they claimed they were invading Afghanistan, there really were only 2 main ones; To ensure a massive Haliburton-paid for Natural Gas Pipeline was completed (after the Taliban had objected to its' construction through the country without a more significant cut of the profits going rightly to the nation that it will go through) and to gain control of the opiate trade that is a major export for the country. Haliburton, for those of you that do not know, was and is the massive sub-contractor that supplies all US military with everything from clothing to food as well as being heavily involved in the Middle East with regards to oil exploration, refinery development and exporting. Oh, and a vast majority of the people in the Bush White House throughout the entire 8 years he was in office, were and still are major stakeholders in Haliburton. Hmmmm.
Back to the point. Where was all the concern for Afghanistan when the Russians were invading them back in the late 1970's, early 1980's? The easy answer is there wasn't any. Instead of concern, the US saw dollar signs and a chance to give the Soviets (back in the day) a little bit of a nose bleed in the process when they began to supply the Mujahadeen (Muslim freedom fighters) with weapons and training in order to help the Afghani people resist Soviet occupation. The CIA spent Billions of dollars funding these freedom fighters and training volunteers, men like Osama Bin Laden. Isn't it ironic that the same man who they were apparently searching for throughout Pakistan and Afghanistan for nearly 10 years was the same man that they themselves had trained back in the late 1970's to do to the Russians what he is credited with doing to the Twin Towers.
In the end, Al-Qaeda is just as much a thorn in the side of the Western World now as it was when Bin Laden was alive so, in reality, other then the psychological aspects of feeling relief and vengeance that he died at the hands of the US military in some parts of the America over his death, the world is no safer now then it was before he died. Bin Laden was a figurehead, the fall guy who, regardless of whether he did or didn't plan the attacks, he took the fall for them as he had planned to all along. He was just a pawn in a much larger game that the US very nearly lost altogether and, without some serious help, I fear may well be destined to lose, especially if a fool like Mitt Romney somehow gets control of the White House.
I fear that they are not nearly done with their plan. Al-Qaeda are, I believe, lulling Americans into a false sense of security as they plan another attack, a major one that will be a coordinated effort with attacks in several major cities in the US and Europe. They have had operatives testing the perimeter as it were, with minor attempts at planting bombs in certain areas of certain cities for years now. If you look at the attacks in London on 7/7 and Spain, you start to realize that they are seemingly throwing pebbles at an electric fence trying to find a weakness.
I don't mean to scare anyone but these are just some scattered thoughts I felt would be best explained especially after watching the most recent episode of the "The Newsroom". I hope to god I am wrong but something tells me I am not.
